Heroin is synthesised from Morphine and is pharmaceutically known as Diamorphine and Diacetylmorphine. Morphine is the principle active ingredient in the opium poppy. Heroin was originally thought by Bayer (German Pharmaceutical Company 1935) to be a non addictive replacement for Morphine, though this was later proved to be untrue. Heroin is now considered to be one of the most addictive drugs available today.
